Knotwell uses a small set of cookies and equivalent local storage. We try to keep the list short. Where a cookie stores information about you personally, it’s tied to your account or session, not to advertising.
What a cookie is here
A cookie is a small text file your browser stores on a particular site. Local storage is similar but persists longer and doesn’t transit to the server on every request. Knotwell uses both, sometimes interchangeably — we describe what each one stores below, not the transport mechanism.
Essential cookies and storage
better-auth.session-token— keeps you signed in. Lives until you sign out or it expires.kw_anon_id— a per-browser anonymous identifier we use for analytics and for tagging your Creator Beta application. Lives up to one year; you can clear it from your browser at any time.csrf_token— a request-level anti-forgery token. Short-lived.
Preference storage
theme— stores your chosen light/dark/system theme preference. Controlled by next-themes. Set when you toggle the theme switch and read on every page to apply the correct class.locale— stores your chosen site locale. Set by the locale switcher and read on every page.
Analytics
Knotwell uses first-party analytics only. We do not embed third-party analytics tags that fingerprint your device for cross-site tracking. The kw_anon_id cookie is the identifier our analytics see — it has no name attached.
Opt-out and controls
You can block all non-essential cookies from your browser’s settings page, or clear the cookies we set, at any time. Clearing better-auth.session-token signs you out. Clearing kw_anon_id resets the anonymous identifier our analytics see.
Where we are required by law to surface a consent prompt for non-essential storage, we do. The design of that prompt is part of Cookie & Consent Preferences (forthcoming).
Changes
We may update this cookie policy. We try to keep the cookie list short; new cookies are added only when needed and announced with the change.
